Tonight we’re in Seattle. 9,000 people tried out. It’s gotta be better than last night! First Uncle Sam came out….uhhhhhhhhhhhhh yea. Police officer. Let’s pray he does better in his police work. He sang “God Bless America”. God was not blessing us when he was singing.

{{Uncle Sam}}

Jennifer aka “the hotness” came next. She sang “Tenderoni”. Jennifer was not hot…not even warm. Not getting off to a good start Seattle! She told Simon off. But, hey, Simon was right in this case. She kept insisting on singing & they were trying to get her out.

{{Hotness}}

Then Amy Salgado came. She was crying before she got in there. We were crying before she left. She claimed she had a cold so she went to get water. Once again, water didn’t help. She also had to be forced out.

{{Amy Salgado}}

This followed a parade of people that couldn’t sing. Darwin Micha Reedy made her entrance & won’t soon be forgotten. She claimed she was sexy & could sing. Have you seen Blondie on crack?? That’s her!!! She sang “Don’t Cha” by the Pussycat Dolls. How can people be so delusional?? Please tell me!!!

{{Darwin Reedy}}

30 minutes in & nobody has gotten through yet. Thomas Daniels came next. He sang “Arms Of A Woman”. Finally someone that can sing!!! He tried out 3 times before & didn’t make it. I don’t have a clue why not. He made it! The first through to Hollywood!

{{Thomas Daniels}}

Melissa Stavros came next. She loves to dance on tables. Uhhhhhhhhhhhh…no. She actually sang “I Like Big Butts”. The she sang her actual song. I don’t know what that was because I couldn’t forget the last one.

{{Melissa Stavros}}

Blake Lewis came. He plays guitar & his hair spikes more than mine does first thing in the morning. He sang “Crazy” by Seal. He was very good. My favorite so far. He made it!! Even though Simon was not crazy about him. But he didn’t like Taylor either & we all know what happened there.

{{Blake Lewis}}

Brother & sister came next. They are from India. Cute as hell. The sister came first. She sang “Summertime”. She was freaking awesome. The reason I haven’t put their names is because I can’t pronounce them or type them. Simon was not impressed with the girl. Brother was next. He was adorable. He was awesome too! So so cute. Both made it!

{{The Sister}}

{{The Brother}}

Nicholas Zitsmann came next. I think I would have rather seen a million zits. He sang “Unchained Melody”. It amazes me how long Paula & them will let these people sing before saying STOP!!! Anyways, he didn’t make it. Like Simon said “What the bloody hell was that?”

{{Nicholas Zitsmann}}

Rudy Cardenas was the last contestant for the first night. He’s in a band & from Venezuela. He sang “Open Arms” by Journey. he was good. Simon didn’t like him. But, he still got through!!! Yea! Cute too!

{{Rudy Cardenas}}

And so comes day 2… Whew…this is so hard with so many people on the show…I can’t wait for Hollywood!

I’m gonna cut day 2 to just the ones that make it because I’m getting tired…lol

You know I don’t know how they sit through all these auditions..I’d be sick.

Okay, I have to tell you about the guy that thinks he’s Taylor Hicks. He’s a hairdresser & he says that the women love him! Can he sing??? He sang “Drift Away”. Uhhhhhhhh..no he cannot sing. But he thinks he can. Sorry, I had to tell you about him.

{{Taylor’s Twin}}

Anna Kearns is 6’7″ & makes Ryan look like a midget. She sang “Respect”. She was pretty good. Guess what? She made it! Simon wasn’t impressed. He said “You just put through a giraffe”.

{{Anna Kearns}}

Jordan Sparks from Arizona came next. She’s 16 & cute as a button. She sang “Because You Loved Me” by Celine Dion. Very original & very good. Her dad played in the NFL for 9 years. Simon thought she was too cutesy. She made it!!

{{Jordan Sparks}}

The final audition from Seattle was “Big Red” aka Steven Thoen . He was missing front teeth & I won’t tell you how he pronounced Karaoke. He sang “Bohemian Rhapsody”. Simon told him it was the weirdest audition ever. It was. He didn’t lie. Steven was a little hostile.

{{Big Red}}

I don’t know the total of contestants who actually got through because they never said. But I can tell you it wasn’t many.

Well, that’s my take on the night. Memphis next week! You know what that means. Alot of Elvis impersonators!

They started the show showing the recap of the winner “Taylor Hicks” from last season, so i got to see my “baby” Taylor Hicks again. I cried so hard when he won last year that i had a headache for 2 days..lol..it’s the only year that who i wanted to win actually won.

The auditions are starting out in Minneapolis, Minnesota

Jewel is a guest judge & is sitting on the panel.

Simon, Randy, & Paula are back for what may be the best season ever of idol, Season 6!

It amazes me how bad some of these people take it when you tell them no. How can you not realize that you can’t sing.

Simon was his usual charming self. But i have to say one thing in his defense, he’s honest. Yes, sometimes brutally honest & that part sucks, but i would rather someone tell me the truth rather than pacify me & give me false hopes.

Okay, so far I’ve seen a guy who walked out in the middle of his audition for water & then had the nerve to come back(water didn’t help) & a Amish guy who’d never seen the show..not looking good so far folks.

{{Amish Guy}}

Then in walked Denise Jackson. Born a crack baby & who’s mom is still dealing with drug issues. 16 years old.She sings Jennifer Holliday’s “Your Gonna Love Me”…. they loved her & so did I. Powerhouse voice! She’s the first through to Hollywood.

{{Denise Jackson}}

Next, they show contestants that forgot their words. And to top it off they can’t sing.

Then there’s the Spanish girl, Perla Meseses, flirting with Ryan. Okay, Ryan’s cute but to me that should be off limits. Simon for sure liked her looks. She sang “Call Me” Blondie. Even though her singing wasn’t great she made it to Hollywood. I guess all you have to do is have big hooters & flirt with Ryan. Hmmmmmmm…imagine that.

{{Perla Meseses}}

47 minutes into the show & only 2 people have gotten through to Hollywood.

Why do people come to the number one show in America to audition dressed like idiots? Somebody please tell me!

Not everybody likes the auditions but I love them. It’s fascinating to watch the judges reactions to the contestants.

Then came Navy guy, Jarrod Fowler, who sang “Blessed The Broken Road” Rascal Flatts. He was super. The only guy I’ve seen so far that can actually sing. Besides, how can you resist a man in a uniform.

{{Navy Guy}}

The we have the girl that came in singing like the lion on The Wizard Of Oz. Even my mouth was dropped open for that one.

{{Lion Girl}}

Then came the vocal teacher who Randy literally raked over the coals.

{{Vocal Teacher}}

Michelle Steingas came next. Pretty girl & a decent singer. Yes, she got through to Hollywood.

I’m kinda disappointed with Minneapolis. I expected much better. But, there’s not a lot of people getting through.

A guy named Matt sang “California Dreaming” Mama’s & Papas. He is 16 & soooo cute. A good performance. He made it! Didn’t catch his last name..sorry.

{{Matt}}

You know, there’s so many remarks about Paula Abdul & I’m so sick of hearing them as I’m sure she is. Why can’t people just leave other people alone. Yes, it’s clear she has issues but can you name one person who doesn’t? Give her a break people!

Rachel Jenkins walked in. Cute girl who works in her dad’s body shop. Also she’s in the reserves. her husbands in Baghdad. “His Eye On A Sparrow” is what she sang. Not great but good enough to make it through!

{{Rachel Jenkins}}

Sara Krueger was next. She sang “Somewhere Over The Rainbow’. It was awesome. The best I’ve heard so far. That happens to be one of my favorite songs in the whole world. So, I’m really hard on the people who sing it. It’s a hard song to pull off in my eyes but she was great!

Jason Anderson came in with props. he was juggling while singing. Neither one was good. He was also not happy with not getting in.

He came out cursing & I thought he was gonna hit Ryan in the head with one of his props!

{{Jason Andesn}}

Then came Brenna Kyner. She was horrible & I’m being really nice. The look on Simon’s face is worth watching the auditions. Simon was really hard on her. Needless to say she didn’t get through.

{{Brenna Kyner}}

10,000 auditions & only 17 got through! That’s flipping amazing! Minnesota is probably turning over tonight in shame. I hope tomorrow’s show is better. Tune in with me then to hear more.

Natalie Wood: A Tribute

By Dina-Marie Kulzer

Although she began her career as a child actress, Natalie Wood was never what you could call a “child star”. There was no hint of the cutesy mannerisms of some of her contemporaries, but instead a sense of seriousness and intelligence beyond her years in her performances. She radiated warmth and grace in every scene. This was particularly evident when she played a war orphan refugee complete with a German accent opposite Orson Welles and Claudette Colbert in Tomorrow Is Forever at the age of six. Her soft brown eyes reflected every emotion she conveyed on screen. Natalie was one of the few child stars that was able to make a successful transition into adult roles with no awkward period in between. Her explanation of this was: “I just went on working. I was always skinny and as I got older I could still play young girls and get by. I was never a child star like Shirley Temple. I always looked like an ordinary kid.” Natalie’s talent was far from ordinary. Orson Welles once said of his little co-star, “She was so good, she frightened me.”

Natalie Wood was born Natasha Nikoleavean Gurdin on July 20, 1938 in San Francisco, California. She was the child of Russian immigrants Nicholas and Maria Zaharenko (later changed to Gurdin), the middle daughter between older sister Olga and younger sister Lana. Natalie made her film debut at the tender age of four. Unable to read yet, her sister Olga would read the lines to her and Natalie would memorize them. Her incredible career spanned almost 40 years.

Natalie Wood and Edmund Gwenn in Miracle on 34th Street (1947)

Perhaps her most memorable childhood role was that of “Susan”, the little girl too sensible to believe in Santa Claus in Miracle on 34th Street (1947). That particular film is a holiday classic. It did, in fact, run on television in Los Angeles on the day of her untimely death. The flickering image of that talented, wise beyond her years child, was heartbreaking to watch.

The turning point in Natalie’s career from child to more mature roles came in 1955 when she co-starred with James Dean and Sal Mineo in Rebel Without a Cause. Natalie received the first of three Oscar nominations for that film. The other two were for her stirring performances in Splendor in the Grass (1961) and Love With the Proper Stranger (1963). Natalie once described the effect Rebel Without a Cause and James Dean had on her career: “It was the first time I had any feelings about a role. Up to then I had just worked without questions. James taught me to relax before playing tense. I had never thought of acting that way before.” In the film Marjorie Morningstar (1958), radiant Natalie again displayed her blossoming dramatic talent.

James Dean & Natalie Wood in Rebel Without a Cause (1955)

The love story of Natalie Wood and Robert Wagner is a unique and moving one. Ten year old Natalie fell in love at first sight with the handsome, enthusiastic young actor when she saw him walking down the hall at 20th Century Fox. She turned to her mother and declared “I’m going to marry him” and she did just that, twice.

They married the first time in 1957 when Natalie was only 19 years old. The Wagners were easily the most stunning Hollywood couple since Gable and Lombard. They divorced in 1962, blaming the end of this first marriage on mutual immaturity and career conflicts.

The sixties were perhaps Natalie’s most productive decade, professionally if not personally. She gave some sterling performances in classic films that reflected the times in which they were made. West Side Story (1961) dealt with racial prejudice, Inside Daisy Clover (1966) with the harsh side of stardom behind the glamour and Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice (1969) had Natalie as a middle class housewife trying to cope with the new morality. Other notable films Natalie made in the sixties were the musical Gypsy (1962) as stripper Gypsy Rose Lee and The Great Race a comedy with Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis (1965).

In 1969 Natalie married British producer Richard Gregson. Their short lived marriage produced one daughter, Natasha born in 1970 who is today an actress and the mirror image of her mother. Natalie divorced Gregson in 1971.

During her separation from Gregson, Natalie began to date Robert Wagner again. They re-discovered how much they loved and meant to each other. The Wagners re-married in 1972 aboard their yacht. Each having gone through analysis between their marriages, they approached this second marriage with new maturity and understanding. Natalie recalled: “When R.J. and I met ten years later, after our divorce, we were different people. It wasn’t like going back to what we had before because we had both changed. We were still attracted to one another –there’s always something about that first love. It was like getting to know a whole new person although somewhere in the back of your mind –you already knew them.”

Natalie’s beautiful daughters Courtney Wagner and Natasha Gregson Wagner

Natalie happily semi-retired to devote more time to her family, which had a new addition Courtney Brooke Wagner born in 1974. Concerning her screen hiatus and motherhood Natalie once said: “I love acting and I know I could have been working all the time. There was a period in my life where I just went from picture to picture. I really didn’t have any other life. I felt rather empty and I guess I was. You must be able to give something back in life. I’ve discovered being a mother puts things in wonderful perspective, I’m so happy that I’m terrified! You can be working on a set where everything seems a matter of life and death, when suddenly you get a phone call that one of your kids has come down with a fever. All at once that becomes much more important than some movie where an actor is throwing a tantrum on the set.”

Robert Wagner & Natalie Wood in the late 1970s

Natalie believed that people who drew a line of distinction between films and television were snobbish, that good work was good work no matter what medium it was performed for. In the later years of her career Natalie gave some exceptional performances for television in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1976) with husband Robert Wagner and Sir Laurence Oliver whom she greatly admired. Also, the mini series From Here to Eternity and the film The Cracker Factory both in 1979.

Natalie Wood would often say in interviews throughout her life, “I like being on the water or near the water but not in the water.” In many of her films she was required to film scenes in the water despite her objections. Bette Davis came to her defense in The Star (1952) when director Stuart Heisler insisted Natalie to jump into the ocean and swim to a raft. He would not listen to Natalie’s fears and Natalie recalled Bette Davis’s threat to leave the film unless a double was used. In 1977 at the American Film Institute tribute to the actress, Natalie recalled “This was the only time I saw the famous Bette Davis temperament surface– and it was not in her own behalf.”

Ironically, it was an accidental drowning that brought premature death to Natalie Wood on Thanksgiving weekend 1981 at the age of forty three, off the coast of Santa Catalina Island while aboard the Wagner’s yacht “The Splendour”, in the dark waters she was terrified of since childhood

The following Wednesday afternoon at Westwood Memorial Park author Thomas Thompson reassured those gathered to say their last farewell to Natalie Wood Wagner, as the Russian string instruments reminiscent of her heritage played softly in the back ground, “What a fabulous life she had!” and what a great lady she was.

Yep, PEZ sez’ SEX.
We all know that sex “sells”, and this is not a new concept. Companies have been using sexy models and themes to sell their product for a very long time. And this business marketing concept was not lost on Edward Haas, as well. Although we think of colorful and witty character heads when we think of PEZ… Haas’s candy creation was specifically made and sold for an adult market until the 60′s. To sell to adults, PEZ and its marketing team used sex to help sell their product.

In his efforts to discover a new flavor for candy, Haas came across oil of peppermint. He knew that this oil could be turned into a new flavorful candy, and set out to make this happen. In that day, oil of peppermint could only be purchased through chemists, but this did not deter Haas. He formulated a new candy using this oil, and it became an instant hit. The rich flavor of the peppermint was considered to be a luxury item. Haas’s market audience would be adults and smokers… with Haas especially targeting the smokers. Haas believed that peppermint candy could be used as a method to get people to quit smoking and to freshen their breath. After overcoming several obstacles (chemists of that day were not happy about having a substance that only they could provide turned into a candy that could be purchased by the general public), Haas started selling his new candy.

Knowing that beautiful women could best sell to the adult market, Haas created the PEZgirls. Haas hired young and beautiful girls to sell his product. They were dressed in stylish trousers and grey jackets and attracted a lot of attention.

Before the 1950′s, PEZ relied on the PEZgirls, print advertising, and signage to help sell their product.

In this magazine ad, PEZ used a beautiful model to help sell its product. At this time, PEZ was still considered a “luxury” candy, and this ad definitely has a classy, refined, “high society” feel to it. In the body of this ad it reads… “[PEZ] is the luxury of the distinguished world, it animates the palate, gives to pure breath and is wonderfully aromatic”.

In the years before the 1950′s, PEZ commissioned many artists to create graphics for their print advertising and signage. One of the more familiar graphics for the PEZgirl was created by Manasee. In this picture on the right is Manasee’s PEZgirl graphic as shown on a 1990′s telephone calling card cover.

Manasee embedded some subtle hints of sexiness in his artwork. Remember that these were done in a time where the level of sexual innuendo and nudity, as we now are accustomed to, would not have been allowed. But yet, there was a certain sexy feel to this graphic, with the PEZgirl having big, dark, beautiful eyes and a full, playful smile. I’m certain that this graphic was an eye catcher in this era.

The 1950′s ushered in the “Golden” age for PEZ. Up until the late 1940′s, PEZ was carried around in small pocket tins. Haas’s determination to make PEZ an alternative to smoking, led PEZ to design a dispenser that would make it just as stylish to whip out and eat a PEZ candy as it was to pull out a lighter to light a cigarette. In 1948, PEZ came out with such a dispenser that would be an “easy, hygienic” way to dispense PEZ… and this dispenser is now what we call a “Regular”.

The post World War II environment of the 1950′s saw a resurgence of sex being used as a marketing device in advertising. “Girlie” Pin-Up artists like Gillette Elvgren and Alberto Vargas, who began their pin-up art careers in the 1940′s, flourished. Their artwork soon became staples for print ads.

During this era, PEZ pushed ahead with targeting an adult audience for their product. The PEZgirl got a new image with the grey jacket of years gone by replaced by a royal blue jacket, signifying a change in the world’s attitude for the new prosperous times. The PEZgirl was to be found everywhere, and she had a new sexy look.

In this picture is the 1950′s PEZgirl carrying a tray of PEZ candy. It was common during this time for beautiful girls to sell product in this manner in clubs and other public venues.

It was in the 1950′s that PEZ hired a new graphic artist to render the PEZgirl for their print ads. This artist was Gerhard Brause, and to many is considered to be the main reason why PEZ became so successful. It wasn’t the candy or the dispensers that caught people’s eyes, it was Brause’s artwork of the PEZgirl. Prior to joining PEZ, Brause worked for the Palmers Company… a leading manufacturer of women’s lingerie and stockings. It was with Palmers that Brause became famous as a graphic artist.

1954 Palmers Ad: Brause

These are two examples of artwork done by Brause for Palmers advertising. His paintings were of high heeled women with silk stockings, and were very sexy. At one point in his career with Palmers, Brause created a piece of advertising artwork that was too sexy for that time, and it was censored. This “scandal” gave Brause a level of notoriety and he became famous overnight.

Brause’s paintings of the PEZgirl were full of life, with a more expressive and sexually charged theme than earlier artists like Manasee. Johann Patek describes Brause as being “The Michelangelo of the 50′s”. Brause created his artwork from mostly his own mental imagery. He rarely used models, but when he did, it was primarily to have fun with them.

This picture shows Brause’s famous image of the PEZgirl, and is often referred to (in the European art world) as being his “Mona Lisa in enamel”.

Brause also created this famous graphic of the PEZgirl sitting on a pack of peppermint candy. You can easily see the influence from his previous work with Palmers in this painting. The PEZgirl has long, shapely legs wearing stockings and high heeled shoes, with her skirt seductively pushed back off of her legs. This is the only graphic of the PEZgirl that shows her below the waist. Haas, although directing the use of hidden sex in their advertising, felt that this graphic was a bit too sexy for the PEZgirl, and would take attention away from the actual product. From this point on, the PEZgirl would only be pictured from the waist up.

Yep… the PEZgirl was SEXY! She definitely had a *Pin Up* style that was all her own.

Brause continued working for PEZ until the late 1970′s. Although not widely known, Brause was also an accomplished sculptor, and PEZ took advantage of these skills as well. Brause created many of the older dispenser heads, including the following: Betsy Ross, Indian Maiden, Duck with Flower, Roar the Lion, the Circus Elephants, and the Make-A-Face dispenser.

His artwork had a very particular flair and was unmistakable. After his departure, there was a definite change in the appearance of PEZ advertising. Brause’s contributions to PEZ’s success is nicely summed up by Johann Patek… “Generally speaking, the whole success of PEZ was responsible largely on the untamed soul and talent of Gerhard Brause plus a free acting team of young guys in the PEZ management, who could spread their unrestricted seeds on a hungry post war ground. It was not the product, it was the way it was advertised and later how it was sold (namely with a character dispenser)”.

This ad came out in July of 1955. Although the girl in the ad is fully clothed, she is shown as being well endowed, with her full breasts straining against a tight and well-fitting blouse. She has a sexy smile and PEZ’s trademark dark and sultry eyes. She is energetically reaching for a piece of candy out of a Golden Glow regular, that is being held in an obviously well-to-do male’s hand (notice the well groomed fingernails). This ad clearly implies “Gentlemen know that PEZ attracts beautiful women”. The product and its message is specifically targeted at adult consumers, and has a very sexy feel to it.

The picture on the right is another picture of the same ad as it appeared on a set of 1990′s telephone calling card covers.

Who says that sexiness is limited to the spring and summer months? This ad from November, 1956, shows the PEZgirl in her best cold weather attire… wearing that picture perfect, trademark smile and inviting eyes! A fun, playful expression is on her face saying “Come on… It’s not that cold”. Her rosey cheeks offer a stunning counterbalance to the coldness around her. This ad is brilliant in how it combines the wintery cold with the cool refreshing taste of peppermint.

This 1950′s ad does not feature the PEZgirl. Instead, PEZ used a more exotic Caribbean Island Girl model to help sell its new lemon flavored candy. In this ad the focal point is not the girls face… but instead her tan skin, her very busty chest pushing out against a thin peasant style blouse, and her small “Barbie” doll sized waist that emphasizes her hourglass figure. This ad has a very sexy and exotic tropical theme to go with the lemon candy. Much sexier and attention-grabbing than showing a fruit tree…

This is an ad as it appeared in July, 1959. An infectious, sexy smile and big beautiful eyes… hallmarks of 50′s Pin Up art.

If you are targeting an adult market for your product, where would you place your ads? How about in a magazine that is sold to men! In the 1950′s and 1960′s, PEZ was a regular advertiser in a popular German men’s *girlie* magazine called “Wiener Magazin”, as shown below. This magazine featured a photo of a girl on the front cover, like Playboy, and often had either a PEZ ad on the back cover or a full page PEZ ad on the inside.

Beautiful women and candy… a winning combination for PEZ!

The 1960′s brought us a whole new attitude in the world. With it, the PEZgirl was changed and updated into a more *MOD* icon for PEZ. Her hairstyle changed, and her PEZ jacket started sporting a new plunging V-neckline. Like her sisters before, the PEZgirl remained on the leading edge of fashion and sexiness.

This picture shows the 1960′s PEZgirl at work… looking great… pushing PEZ.

The 1970′s PEZgirl erupted onto the scene with The-Girl-Next-Door beauty and sexiness. In this PEZ Company photograph, you can see how the PEZgirl’s looks had changed to match with the times. Long, wavy, Farah Fawcet hair was all the rage… and the PEZgirl pioneered this style.

These two pictures show both sides of a single two-sided ad. In the top picture, the ad reads “Pull On – Take Off…. The New Play Idea of PEZ”. The bottom ad says “You’ll enjoy the new play idea of PEZ”. This ad was created to call attention to the new dispenser costumes that were being packaged in with the dispensers and candy.

One of the other know nudity ads had a slogan of “Dress Me – Undress me”.

These are pretty darn racy stuff from a company that sells candy dispensers to *kids*. I say that PEZ was targeting the “kid” in their adult market. And to make sure that the adults were still taking notice, well…..

In reality, these ads are also an example of how laid back Europeans are about nudity in general.

Yep… PEZ sez’ Sex!

You know I started surfing last night on the different blogs & I came across one that really disturbed me. This girl is going to committ suicide because she has this disease that makes her body smell. No matter what she does or no matter how many bathes she takes, she smells.

Now, I know this would be horrible to live with but I pray this girl finds some peace in her life. I’ve been pretty down before, as a matter of fact I’m down right now but I don’t want to die. I’m fighting to live.

My son’s father killed hisself 5 years ago & it destroyed the family & almost sent me over the edge. If they only knew the after effect of what they have done. It’s horrible.

Anyways, I’m trying to move out of this terrible place I live in & gets some peace in my life. I have to work on hardly any sleep because believe me these natives are restless.
